Facebook represents a huge potential market for your social media efforts. If you don’t use any other social media platform to promote your business, you MUST – MUST, use Facebook. You can’t get around it.

Consider these statistics:

  • Worldwide, there are over 1.71 billion monthly active Facebook users which is a 15 percent increase year over year.
  • 13 billion people log onto Facebook daily.
  • Age 25 to 34, at 29.7% of users, is the most common age demographic. What this means for you: This is the prime target demographic for many businesses’ marketing efforts, and you have the chance to engage these key consumers on Facebook.
  • Facebook users are 76% female and 66% male. What this means for you: if you are selling makeup, clothing, jewelry, household goods – whatever – this is a gold mine for you because women consume these items. If your target market is women, this is a no-brainer!
  • 80% of consumers say they are more likely to try a new product or service if it’s suggested them by a friend on social media.

Having said all that let me say this, it is becoming increasingly difficult to stand out from the crowd on Facebook.

I remember a time where I would post something on my business page and the post would reach a huge number of people.

Not anymore.

It's Affordable

Facebook is a business and just like any business (yours and mine included), we are in business to make money. If you are not, you have an expensive or interesting hobby. (Sorry to have digressed.) Because this social media platform is in the business of making money (millions of it by the way), they changed up their algorithms and to get your post about your business, product, service noticed, you will need to pay for an ad.

But guess what; you can pay as little as $5 a week to place an ad. Of course, once you find out which ads work the best for your business, you will want to increase your reach and therefore, you will naturally want to increase the amount you spend.

I don’t want to fire hose you with Facebook how-to’s but you need to know the basics so you can at least get started. So here is part 1 of the 5-Step Strategy to Market Your Business on Facebook Series:

  1. Identify and find your ideal customer. You must create a Facebook fan or business page to identify your customers (the people who visit your page). Follow these directions to create a Facebook page for your business:
  • Go to facebook.com/pages/create.
  • Click to choose a Page category.
  • Select a more specific category from the drop down menu and fill out the required information.
  • Click Get Started and follow the on-screen instructions.

If you already have a page, you already have statistics containing demographics of who has visited your page. To see these statistics, follow these steps:

  • Go to your Facebook page and look at the top of the page. Click on “Insights.”
  • Click on any of the squares (Page Views, Page Likes, etc.) and you will see great detail about who your potential customers are – the people visiting your page. You can click on any of the headings (age, gender, country, city, device).

Speaking of device, if your website is not adapted to be shown on mobile devices (smartphones, tablets, etc.), you are going to miss out on a LOT of potential customers and sales.
