Use Your Story to Build Your Brand

YOUR STORY = Your Brand.png

Never, ever underestimate the power of your personal story to grow your brand and business.

To build your brand, you are going to have to learn how to position yourself as an expert in your industry.  One of the best ways to position yourself as an expert is by sharing with your target market your story of how you: succeeded, overcame obstacles and insurmountable odds, or how you created a product or service based on a great need because you realized that need in your own life.

Most people are ashamed or afraid to own their story if their story includes great pain, mistakes or failure but whose story doesn’t contain some or all of that?

I can think of two great examples of women who told their story (the good, bad and ugly) and it turned them into millionaires or close to it.  Let’s take a look at Oprah.  We’ve all heard the story that Oprah was conceived under a tree somewhere when 2 teenage kids had sex for the first and only time.  How she was raised dirt poor on a farm in Mississippi and how she was sexually assaulted as a child.  We’ve heard how she gave birth to a baby girl at the age of 14.  Oprah’s message of overcoming and triumphing and her ability to encourage others to share their truth has made her a millionaire – well on her way to becoming a billionaire.

Another woman who may not be known to everyone but her story is still very compelling is Dani Johnson.  Dani was a 21-year old homeless woman in Hawaii who had also endured sexual abuse as a child and she tried to commit suicide after a cocaine binge.  After that binge, she was prepared to kill herself but her a voice which told her she was more than that.  She was homeless but her eye caught in the backseat of her old car (which is where she was sleeping at night) a weight loss program she’d bought a couple of weeks earlier.  She listened to that voice and decided to sell that weight loss program and the rest is history!  Dani Johnson is now a multi-millionaire and oversees 5 companies.

My story as it pertains to life coaching and overcoming challenges which face so many women is that I have survived multiple divorces, single parenthood, financial ruin (bankruptcy, foreclosure, car repossession, and homelessness).  My children turned out great; one is an insurance professional and the other is a Hollywood actor.  I am now living in my dream home in Atlanta and building a thriving coaching business.  My story as it pertains to business coaching is that I have owned several successful business and I had to build each one of them while working full-time for someone else using only the money from my salary to build my businesses.  I am an expert at boot-strapping to start a business!

Oprah and Dani’s stories are the things which legends are made of.  Here are a few tips about using your story to build your brand:

1.       Your story will become your brand.  Dani Johnson is now known as the homeless woman who went from homeless to millionaire in 2 years.

2.       Create a vision for your brand.  Once you create a vision for your brand, only accept and focus on opportunities that will lead to achieving your vision.  A lot of bright, shiny objects will be presented to your or will cross your path.  STAY FOCUSED ON YOUR VISION.

3.       Believe in and be confident in your story, your brand and your vision.  Know your worth and the worth of your brand.  Know that your perfect target market, your tribe, will pay you and pay you well for the products and services that you have created.

4.       Share your knowledge.  Regardless of what you are selling, content is king.  Even if you are involved in a multi-level marketing opportunity, you are an event planner or you are selling purses or makeup, you have got to start getting your knowledge about how your product or service will help others out there.  Consider creating a blog, writing guest articles, creating a Facebook group or sharing your expertise in the comment section of an Instagram post.

5.       Let ‘em see your face.  People, especially women, buy from people they know, like and trust and one of the best ways to get them to know, like and trust you is live video.  Recorded video is good to but every now and then, you’ve got to go live. This is something I have struggled with but not anymore! Live streaming gives people the chance to ask questions about your products, your services or your opportunity.

You can also do live presentations via teleseminars (phone only) or webinars where you can      make your presentation via video.  Of course, you want to make sure you do live streams on  Facebook and Instagram if your target market frequents those social media platforms.

Always remember to weave your story into your content, live or recorded presentations.  Regardless of how tired YOU may be of telling your story, tell it any way.  It will sell because it will draw your tribe to you – people who need exactly what you are selling!
